Aloha Class of 2014

On the morning of Friday, June 20th,  Saint Victor’s Preschool bid farewell and “Aloha”  to our pre-k children moving onwards to Kindergarten and various TK programs in the fall. It was a bittersweet moment for the teachers as we will  miss them dearly, but we are so excited for them — as this is just the start of their wonderful adventures!

Good Friday Celebration and Mass

On Good Friday, the children of Saint Victor’s Preschool prepared a wonderful feast! The morning was spent making delicious cinnamon rolls with Miss Jenine and decorating Easter baskets with Miss Stephanie and Miss Eunice.

Miss Diana’s morning circle time focused on the meaning of and the chronological order of events during Lent – beginning with Ash Wednesday and culminating with Easter Sunday. The children were very excited to learn about Easter and collect Easter eggs in the classroom for their baskets.

After the Easter Eggs hunt, the children enjoyed a communal style lunch setting before heading up to Saint Victor Church for the Good Friday noon mass with Monsignor Murphy and Fr. Lopez. The children and staff of Saint Victor’s preschool had a very blessed Good Friday.

The Page Museum Field Trip

IMG_7676

On Friday May 2nd, the children, parent volunteers and staff of Saint Victor’s Preschool made their way to the Page Museum, located in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles. The children were very excited to see the prehistoric fossils, the mammoth exhibit, the saber tooth cat exhibit, and all the fun hands on learning centers available. After spending quite a bit of time with each exhibit, the children all sat down for a preschool page museum field trip picture.

The rest of the morning was spent having a lovely outdoor lunch in the surrounding park. It was wonderful to see all the parent volunteers of Saint Victor’s Preschool socializing and having a great morning! The children all ate their lunch quickly and played among the trees and grassy area.

As always, a BIG thank you to all of the parent volunteers that joined us for this field trip, it would not have been possible without your support!

The Little Red Hen & a baking lesson w/ Grammie Louise

Today’s baking lesson was led by Grace’s Grammie Louise (Louise Murphy). Grammie began the lesson by explaining to the children what bread is made of – wheat. And she continued with a story about how wheat is grown and how bread is made. She also read “The Little Red Hen”, which is a much beloved children’s story.

The children were then each assigned a table (with a teacher supervising) that contained all the necessary ingredients and utensils – Water, oil, eggs, salt, sugar, yeast, and bread flour. Every child was given an opportunity to pour water, yeast, salt and sugar into a large bowl. Next they were able to crack an egg and pour it into the dough mix. After mixing all the ingredients, the teachers added the appropriate amount of flour – and voila! The children were were now looking at the beginning of bread – a sticky dough. The children were then given their own piece of dough to knead – I think they loved that part the best!!

Grammie Louise then covered each bowl of dough and allowed the dough to rise. Each child then placed a piece of dough into their own mini bread pan. Everyone received a mini bread loaf to take home and enjoy. A BIG THANK YOU to Louise Murphy for taking the time to prepare such an amazing hands on baking lesson for the children!

Baking with young children is an excellent hands on learning experience. Many concepts can be taught in the kitchen cooking =

1.) Counting – Counting out the the number of ingredients in the recipe. Measuring the correct amount of ingredients to add to the mixture.

2.) Science – Cooking and baking is science. When the children add ingredients and bake bread, they are watching a transformation of sorts. Many things become one when you add heat from the oven.

3.) Fine motor skills – Mixing, kneading, cracking eggs, pouring water, etc. are all fine motor skills. By helping in the kitchen , the children are given numerous opportunities to practice and perfect these skills.

4.) Patience & taking turns Cooking takes a fair amount of waiting for your turn. This is another opportunity for children to learn patience and taking turns.

5.) Teamwork  Just like the story of the “Little Red Hen”, when everyone contributes and works hard towards a common goal (teamwork) everyone can enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Saint Victor’s Preschool Resurrection Play

On Friday April 11th  the children of Saint Victor’s Preschool performed a “Resurrection Play” and sang several Easter songs during a scheduled Lenten Dinner at St. Victor Church. The children spent two weeks prior rehearsing the play and practicing their songs. The teachers created a beautiful backdrop and empty tomb prop to accompany the play and Miss Diana accompanied the children with her guitar while the children sang their songs. All of their hard work and dedication paid off as the show was a hit! A very special thank you to all the families and parishioner’s that came out to support the preschool! We couldn’t have done it without you.

Saint Patrick’s Day

st-patrick[1]

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day ! Today the children learned who Saint Patrick was and why he was so important. They learned that the Shamrock represents the holy trinity, that Saint Patrick was a priest and Bishop and that he was able to convert Kings to Catholicism and founded many Catholic Churches in Ireland. He is representative of all the good one person can do — that is the power of holiness.

Lent

lent_6316c

The Lenten season begins with the receiving of ashes on Ash Wednesday, lasting 40 days (not counting Sundays) and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. On Ash Wednesday, (though not a holy day of obligation) the faithful go to church to receive a sign of the cross on their forehead. This mark is a reminder of our morality and a call for repentance.

In observance of Ash Wednesday, the staff, children and parent volunteers of Saint Preschool attended the noon mass at Saint Victor Church to receive ashes. Monsignor Murphy asked that the children be kind to each other, their friends, teachers and parents. The overall message of the mass was:

Pray like no one is watching you. Fast like no one is watching you. Do good like no one is watching you. God knows.”

A BIG thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers — your overwhelming support, active participation and genuine love for Saint Victor’s Preschool are truly the pillars of our foundation.
