Neighborhood walking trips

During the summer when the sun is shinning and the weather is warm — the teachers and children leave the classroom to take short walking trips around the neighborhood! These small walking field trip are fabulous for many reasons!

1. The children learn all about safety awareness and stranger danger.

2. The children get a good amount of exercise walking around our quiet neighborhood.

2. Getting out of the classroom and into the sunshine is FUN!!

If you’re passing by the neighborhood and see the preschoolers of Saint Victor’s Preschool on a walking trip – give us a wave!

Summer Week 4 – Cooking!

This week was all about cooking! The teachers planned an array of fun cooking activities that helped to promote and encourage the children’s sense of curiosity, creativity, and just plain having fun! The cooking activities included — making jell-o, banana and strawberry fruit smoothies, blue egg omelets with cheese, chocolate covered bananas, lemonade and a fruit salad!

I am a huge fan of children helping out in the kitchen! It’s a wonderful way to teach and bond with your child. Children are not perfect — they will make a mess and take longer than you would like by helping out. But the experience is priceless, the memories will last forever and the benefits are immense. And you might just spark a life long passion for cooking within your child!

Cooking/baking teaches children many concepts! They include:

1.) Patience —Learning to wait for their turn.

2.) Counting – Count the numbers of ingredients in the recipe.

3.) Science – Cooking is science — baking, frying, etc.

4.) Fine motor skills – Cracking eggs and mixing the batter.

5) Team work – The children learn that working together as a team will help everyone!

6.) Fun – Cooking/baking is super fun, messy and produces a yummy finished product!

Summer School Week 3 – “Farm Animals”

“Farm animals” was the theme for our third awesome week of summer school! We talked about various farm/barnyard animals including cows, horses, chickens, pigs and sheep! The children learned that cows make milk, chickens lay eggs and pigs like to roll around in the mud to keep themselves cool.

The fun crafts included cotton ball sheep, cute pink pigs in mud (brown paint), horses of all colors and chickens too! We had so much fun singing “Old McDonald had a farm”, reading “The Three Little Pigs”, and “The little red hen”!  The preschool went for a walk around the church and the neighborhood — taking short walking trips helps build safety awareness! All in all, it was a super fun week!

Summer School Week 2 – “Gardening”

The second week of summer school was all about  “Gardening”! The children learned all about the different parts of a flower — i.e. stem, petal, roots! They even got to do some “hands on” gardening in the back yard playground.

Miss Alejandra and the children planted various seeds into soil  — all the children were given the opportunity to touch and feel the soil before planting the seeds. The children will continue to water their own special plants throughout the summer — we are excited to watch our plants grow!!

In addition to planting flowers, the children took a stroll up to the garden sanctuary directly in front of Saint Victor Church! The garden sanctuary has many, many beautiful flowers in bloom and is truly a secret garden of sorts. In the classroom, the children painted sunflowers and read stories about flowers.

It was a beautiful week of growing and learning!

Saint Victor’s Preschool “Wild West Round Up”

On Friday June 19th, the Saint Victor’s Preschool celebrated its 4th Annual Farewell celebration — as we said goodbye to our departing tkers and Kindergarteners!

This year’s theme was the “Wild West”! The classroom was decorated with cactus, wanted posters and balloons! The children (and teachers) dressed as cowgirls and cowboys and celebrated by singing special farewell songs and by performing a square dance!

The event was definitely bittersweet as we are sad to see our friends leave but happy they are moving on to new schools and new adventures!
